"We Weren’t Good Enough" – Harvey Elliott Takes Responsibility for Liverpool’s FA Cup Exit
Harvey Elliott admits Liverpool's performance against Plymouth wasn’t up to standard, acknowledging the team's struggles and the lessons to be learned from the defeat.
Liverpool suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Championship side Plymouth in the FA Cup, and Harvey Elliott didn’t shy away from taking responsibility. Despite being one of the more experienced players in Arne Slot’s rotated squad, the 21-year-old struggled to make an impact.
Elliott, who had a difficult game and caused the deciding penalty with a handball, displayed maturity by taking part in the post-match interview. Speaking to LFCTV, he confessed that Liverpool’s performance was far from good.
“It wasn’t our best game at all, we all knew that on the pitch,” Elliott said. “But one thing about the team today, we fought to the end, we kept trying, we kept pushing. But sometimes this is what happens in football – today we weren’t good enough.”
Liverpool struggled throughout the game, failing to breakdown a Plymouth team that was well-organized. Elliott Admitted that everyone, including himself, had to go through a “learning curve” in the game. Trey Nyoni, Trent Kone-Doherty, James McConnell, and Isaac Mabaya were among the young players he played with.
Despite the Reds creating a few chances, Plymouth’s goalkeeper made some amazing saves, including an important one from Diogo Jota. Elliott highlighted this, saying:
“We just lacked that composure at the end. But at the same time, their ‘keeper made some unbelievable saves, one from Jota in particular, and credit where credit is due. They were great today and made it really, really hard for us.”
Despite the loss, Elliott remains optimistic, believing that setbacks like this can help young players grow. “It’s a different game for us because we’re not used to playing these kinds of games. And there are things we can learn, and for myself and the younger lads, we can keep taking it in our career,” he added.
Arne Slot may give Elliott less opportunity to establish himself now that Liverpool has been knocked out of the FA Cup. But his potential is undeniable, and his willingness to take responsibility shows how much he has grown as a player.
