Shocking Loophole Could Make Jadon Sancho Return to Man Utd Despite Chelsea’s Obligation to Buy

Jadon Sancho’s future at Chelsea is not as certain as many thought, as a loophole in his transfer deal could allow him to return to Manchester United next season. Despite Chelsea’s obligation to buy the winger, reports suggest they could still back out—but at a significant financial cost.
Sancho, 24, joined Chelsea on a season-long loan last summer after falling out with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, he has played 26 matches and scored two goals. Though his performances have been mixed, he has openly said he feels “at home” at Chelsea.
The agreement between Chelsea and United includes an obligation to buy Sancho permanently if Chelsea finishes 14th or higher in the Premier League. The final transfer fee is expected to be between £22 million and £25 million, depending on Chelsea’s final league position.
Despite the obligation-to-buy clause, a surprising report from The Daily Mail suggests Chelsea could still back out. If they decide not to complete the deal, Sancho would return to Manchester United, where he still has 18 months left on his £250,000-a-week contract.
However, pulling out of the deal would come at a cost. Chelsea would have to pay a significant financial penalty if they refuse to sign him.
Chelsea also has another option: they could go through with the transfer and then sell Sancho to another club immediately, avoiding the return to Old Trafford.
Sancho’s potential return to United would create a financial headache for the club. United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently criticized the club’s transfer spending, pointing out that they still owe Borussia Dortmund £17 million for Sancho’s 2021 transfer.
Speaking in an interview, Ratcliffe said:
“Some players are not good enough, and some are probably overpaid. But for us to build the squad we want, it will take time.”
Sancho’s transfer was one of United’s biggest deals in recent years, costing them £73 million, but he failed to meet expectations at Old Trafford. If Chelsea backs out of the deal, United would have to find another club willing to take him—or reintegrate him into their squad.
While the Daily Mail claims Sancho could return to United, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insists that won’t happen. In February, Romano said:
“I can guarantee to you that Chelsea are still very happy with the signing of Jadon Sancho. The obligation to buy is not in doubt. He’s going to be a Chelsea player by the end of the season. No doubts. That’s guaranteed.”
Despite criticism of Sancho’s performances, Chelsea remains committed to keeping him, believing he can be an important part of their squad under Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea’s fight for a top-four finish could impact Sancho’s future. If they qualify for the Champions League, they are unlikely to break the arrangement. However, if they struggle to meet their objectives, they may reconsider their decision.
