Paul Scholes Urges Man United to Sell Bruno Fernandes: “He Confuses the System – Take the £100m!”

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged the club to take the money and sell captain Bruno Fernandes this summer — with a huge £100million offer reportedly on the table from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

Al-Hilal are pushing hard to land the 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder, and talks with his representatives are said to be progressing well. Fernandes, who has captained United through a tough season, is now giving serious thought to making the move — and Scholes believes the timing might be right for everyone.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes said: “They are talking about £100m for him. Man United cannot say no to that.”

He added: “I know he has been brilliant and carried the team on his back but where does he play? What is his position? Do you see him as a number 10? A holding midfielder? He almost confuses the whole system.”

Despite his importance in recent seasons, Fernandes was at the heart of a struggling United team that recorded its worst-ever Premier League finish. And with new manager Ruben Amorim expected to bring fresh ideas to Old Trafford, questions are being raised about how the club’s captain fits into the plans.

Scholes continued: “When you’re getting £100m for him, you snap their hand off and take it.”

The 11-time Premier League winner isn’t alone in his views. Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher echoed the sentiment, suggesting Fernandes lacks positional discipline. “I’ve always described Bruno Fernandes as a great talent but not a great player,” Carragher said. “He’s a bit mad in that he just runs all over the place, like a kid in the school yard. The best player in the school yard doing everything — but in a really poor team.”

Fernandes has made no clear commitment to staying at United and even hinted after their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham that his future could lie elsewhere.

He said last week: “I have always been honest. I’ve always said I will be here until the club says it’s time to go. But football is like this — you never know.”

With United failing to secure Champions League football and needing to balance the books under Financial Fair Play rules, selling a top player like Fernandes could help fund Amorim’s squad rebuild.

Still, Amorim has made it clear he values Fernandes highly. During the club’s post-season tour in Asia, he praised the midfielder’s leadership and influence.

“You can see by his performances. You can see by his leadership,” Amorim said. “In difficult moments, Bruno is the guy who takes responsibility. He should do because he is the captain.”
