The Belgian star, who has played a key role in City’s success since joining the club in 2015, is expected to move on when his contract ends this summer. Many clubs are interested in signing him, including teams in England and the United States. However, De Bruyne wants to stay in Europe, and Real Madrid is now at the top of his list.
According to a report from Defensa Central, De Bruyne has told Real Madrid he wants to play for them and is willing to take a pay cut to make the move happen. Real are said to be interested in signing him – even though they usually prefer younger players.
Real Madrid have signed big names for free in the past, including Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger, and David Alaba. Now, De Bruyne could be the next experienced player to join them without a transfer fee.
Despite struggling with a few injuries this season, De Bruyne says he can still play at a high level. After City’s 1-0 win over Wolves earlier this month, he seemed to suggest that he’s preparing to say goodbye.
“I know I only have one home game left, but I just try to do my job,” De Bruyne said. “Some of my teammates have told me it’s sad that I might leave, but that’s life sometimes. I don’t know what will happen next, but I believe I can still play here.”
City manager Pep Guardiola praised De Bruyne for everything he has done for the club.
“I want what’s best for Kevin,” Guardiola said. “He’s been amazing for us. It’s very hard to replace someone like him. He’s not just important for his skills, but also for what he means to the fans. A big part of our success belongs to him.”
De Bruyne has helped City win five Premier League titles, several domestic cups, and their first-ever Champions League trophy.
If Real Madrid sign him, De Bruyne could be joining Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is also expected to move to Madrid for free this summer. It would be another huge signing for the Spanish club – and possibly the start of a new chapter in De Bruyne’s brilliant career.
