"He’s The Only Shinning Light At Manchester United" – Joe Cole Urges Bruno Fernandes to Leave Old Trafford
Former Chelsea and Liverpool star Joe Cole believes Bruno Fernandes deserves to play for a club that matches his ambitions, insisting the Manchester United captain has done all he can at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes has been a key player for Manchester United since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020. Over the years, he has contributed 95 goals and 81 assists in 277 appearances, proving to be one of the club’s most consistent performers. However, despite his efforts, Fernandes continues to face harsh criticism, especially since becoming club captain under Erik ten Hag in 2023.
Now, former Chelsea and Liverpool player Joe Cole believes Fernandes should leave Manchester United, arguing that the club does not appreciate his talent.
Speaking to Paddy Power, Joe Cole stated that Fernandes is carrying the team but still gets most of the blame when things go wrong.
“If I’m Bruno Fernandes, I’d absolutely be looking for a move away from Manchester United,” Cole said. “He must go home at night and wonder why everyone is criticizing him when he’s the only one pulling his weight in this team.”
Cole pointed out that Fernandes is a player who could “thrive in most teams” and should consider moving to a club where he can compete for major trophies.
“I don’t think he’s won a league in his career, and he needs to go and prove to himself that he can play in a top side because he’s run his race at Manchester United,” he added.
Bruno Fernandes is aware of the criticism he receives, particularly from former United captain Roy Keane. However, instead of reacting negatively, he takes it as motivation to improve.
“Obviously, it’s not nice to hear those things about you,” Fernandes admitted. “But at the same time, it motivates me. I know Roy Keane was one of the best captains this club ever had, and I respect his opinion.”
Despite the pressure, Fernandes remains committed to leading the team in his own way.
Interestingly, Fernandes has now revealed that he had offers to leave Manchester United in the summer but decided to stay after speaking with the club.
“I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave,” he said. “They told me they still saw me as an important part of the team. I also spoke with Ten Hag, and he was very clear that he wanted me to stay for the rebuild.”
While Fernandes has chosen to stay at Old Trafford for now, questions remain about his future. If Manchester United continues to struggle, will he finally decide to move on?
