Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim praised Alejandro Garnacho’s vital second-half effort in their 2-0 victory over FCSB. The Red Devils’ victory in Bucharest secured straight qualification to the Europa League’s final 16, avoiding the extra play-off round.
The first half of the game was equally contested, with United finding it difficult to gain any ground. The game was significantly changed by Amorim’s key substitution of Garnacho and Amad Diallo at halftime. Garnacho helped Kobbie Mainoo score and came close to scoring himself after hitting the post, giving United’s attack additional speed and creativity.
The 20-year-old winger completed five successful dribbles in the second half—more than any other player in the entire match. His energy and attacking threat made a huge difference, helping United take full control of the game.
Amorim acknowledged Garnacho’s influence, saying:
“Not entirely the game, but… in the first half, they ran a lot to cover all the spaces. In the second half, the opponent also gets tired, and that’s when the guys who come in can make an impact.”
He further explained that Garnacho is a different type of player than Christian Eriksen, who had started in that position.
“Garna has a different pace and is more like a forward, a winger. Amad is really good one-on-one, which forces defenders to stay close to him and opens up more space.”
Garnacho’s brilliant performance comes at a time when there are rumors linking him with a move to Chelsea. Reports suggest that the Blues are considering a late bid for the young winger before the transfer deadline on Monday, February 3.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson also pointed out Garnacho’s impact, telling BBC Radio 5 Live:
“Alejandro Garnacho, last week against Rangers and tonight, made the difference. The system worked well, and Amorim allows him to drift wide, creating flexibility in the attack.”
One of the biggest advantages of this victory is that Manchester United now go straight into the last 16 of the Europa League, skipping the extra play-off round.
Amorim emphasized how valuable this is for the team, saying:
“That is really important for us to have time to train and build a better connection between the players and staff.”
By avoiding the extra games, United will have two free midweeks next month, giving them more time to prepare for upcoming matches and work on Amorim’s tactical plans.
