One of the biggest talking points of the first half came when Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier appeared to handle the ball inside his own box. Luis Díaz, who was closest to the incident, immediately appealed for a penalty, but referee John Brooks waved away the protests.

VAR took a quick look but decided there was no foul play, allowing the game to continue—much to the frustration of Liverpool supporters.
Sky Sports’ commentary described the moment:
“40: PENALTY APPEAL… NOTHING DOING! Another long ball makes Trippier defend who must be thinking about that hamstring. He does deal with it, but the ball does hit his hand and he was inside the box. VAR takes a look and decides no foul play.”
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville was on commentary duty and shared his thoughts on the incident. His words will only add to Liverpool fans’ frustration.
“I think in Europe, that’s a penalty. I think in England we are all saying we wouldn’t like it given against us,” Neville admitted.
His comments suggest that if this game were played in the Champions League, Liverpool might have been awarded a penalty.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher also weighed in on the debate while speaking on ITV Sports. He echoed Neville’s thoughts, pointing out how inconsistent refereeing decisions have been in recent games.
Looking at the replay, Trippier’s arm appeared to be raised in an unnatural position, and the ball clearly made contact. While some might argue that awarding a penalty would have been harsh, similar handball incidents have led to spot-kicks in other games.
