Aston Villa fans were left furious after a controversial referee decision at Old Trafford cost them a potential Champions League spot in a dramatic clash against Manchester United.

The incident occurred early in the match when Villa’s Morgan Rogers appeared to cleanly dispossess United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and slotted the ball into the net. Villa players and fans celebrated what they believed was a crucial opener — a goal that could have pushed them into the Premier League’s top five with Newcastle trailing Everton.

But referee Thomas Bramall had already blown his whistle for a foul on Bayindir before the ball crossed the line, ruling the goal out and making a VAR review impossible.

Replays showed Bayindir only had one hand on the ball, which means, by the rules, he wasn’t fully in control. Many fans and pundits believed that had VAR been allowed to step in, the goal would likely have stood.

TNT Sports commentators Ally McCoist and Darren Fletcher were left baffled, saying during the broadcast: “That’s a goal. There’s no foul there.”

Online, the reaction was even stronger. One fan raged: “Absolutely shockingly poor from the officials! A homer decision if I’ve ever seen one. The standard of refereeing in the Premier League is a disgrace.”

Another questioned why the referee didn’t go to the monitor: “Millions are on the line for Champions League football, and the ref doesn’t even check the replay? Ridiculous.”

Soon after the disallowed goal, Manchester United struck twice through Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen, swinging the game in their favour and pushing Villa down to sixth — meaning they’ll be playing Europa League football in the 2025/26 season.

In response to the backlash, the Premier League’s match centre issued a statement: “The referee’s call was a free kick to Manchester United with Bayindir deemed to be in control of the ball before Rogers gained possession. The whistle was blown by the referee before the ball entered the goal, therefore the incident was not reviewable by VAR.”

But that explanation did little to calm the anger among Villa supporters, who feel robbed of a season-defining moment.

With Unai Emery’s side now forced to settle for the Europa League, fans are left wondering what might have been — and calling for urgent improvements in how referees handle key moments in crucial matches.
