"If I'm Not the Right Guy, I’ll Leave Tomorrow" – Ruben Amorim Offers to Quit Man United Without Compensation

Ruben Amorim has admitted he is willing to walk away from Manchester United without compensation if the club no longer believes in his ability to lead the team forward.

The Portuguese manager, who took over in November from Erik ten Hag, has endured a difficult debut season at Old Trafford. Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final not only ended United’s hopes of silverware this season—it also ensured they will miss out on European football entirely next year.

It marks Manchester United’s worst campaign in over five decades. With just one game left to play—a final home fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday—United are sitting in 16th place in the Premier League and have only managed six wins from 26 league matches under Amorim’s leadership.

Amorim made it clear in his post-match press conference that he’s not clinging to his position. “I have nothing to show to the fans to say I am going to improve,” he said. “So in this moment, it is a little bit of faith. Let’s see. I am always open—if the board and the fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation.”

However, Amorim added that he won’t resign. “I will not quit. I am really confident in my job,” he said. “I will not change anything in the way I do things.”

The former Sporting Lisbon coach defended his approach and pointed to progress in some areas, particularly the team’s attacking play. “We are creating situations,” he noted. “If you look at the opportunities we had, it’s different players. It’s not the problem of one guy. We are not scoring goals, and the goalkeeper [against Spurs] did a great job.”

Still, United’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal has been costly. The club has now lost to Spurs four times this season—in the league, in the League Cup, and now in the Europa League final in Bilbao. In the latest defeat, Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal was enough to hand Spurs the win and a Champions League spot.
