Patrice Evra Says Ruben Amorim Has Made “Big Improvements” at Manchester United Despite Tough Season

Patrice Evra believes Ruben Amorim has brought real progress to Manchester United, even though results have been poor and the season is widely seen as one to forget.

Amorim, who took over from Sporting Lisbon in November, has faced a difficult start to life at Old Trafford. The highly-rated coach was expected to quickly turn things around, but United remain stuck in 16th place in the Premier League after last weekend’s 2-1 loss to West Ham — their 17th league defeat of the campaign.

With their domestic form in crisis, winning the Europa League is now seen as the club’s only hope of saving the season. Before that, United must first face Chelsea on Friday in what could be a crucial confidence-booster ahead of their semi-final clash at the Estadio de San Mamés.

Despite the struggles, former United defender Evra remains optimistic about the club’s direction under Amorim. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Frenchman admitted this has been a “disaster” of a season, but insisted Amorim is laying strong foundations.

“It’s been a disaster. It’s not a great season,” Evra said. “I think Amorim knows that. I had a meeting with him and he’s not happy, but I love his humility because he admits things.”

Evra also praised Amorim’s personality and the respect he’s shown toward the club’s culture.

“I said to him, ‘welcome to your club,’ and he replied, ‘no Patrice, I’m at your club.’ I love that about him.”

While fans have been frustrated by the lack of progress on the pitch, Evra believes the behind-the-scenes changes are already showing.

“It’s a process. In his first year, I see a lot of improvements,” he said. “There is discipline. The player who doesn’t want to run, who doesn’t want to die for the badge, they won’t play for Manchester United.”

Amorim has already brought in new faces like Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven, and although they haven’t made a huge impact yet, Evra says that’s no reason to panic.

“Even myself with [Nemanja] Vidic, when we arrived, we needed six months to adapt. So next year, that won’t be an excuse.”

He also suggested that a Champions League spot would give Amorim more power in the transfer market this summer.

“If we get into the Champions League, he’ll be able to attract better players — maybe even the ones he wanted from the start. This is a crucial moment in the club’s history.”

Evra made a point to single out Bruno Fernandes as the team’s standout performer during a difficult season.

“He’s the most important player in the team. If Bruno wasn’t there, maybe we wouldn’t even be in the final of the Europa League,” he said. “I’m not ashamed to say that without him, we could have been relegated.”

With United’s Europa League hopes still alive, Evra is calling on the club to finish strong and focus on building for a better campaign next year.

“We are in this final and we need to make sure we get the right players to be competitive. We need to forget this season. I’m confident, but it’s going to be tough. Come on United.”

While results haven’t yet matched the expectations that came with Amorim’s arrival, Evra’s message is clear — the project has started, the foundations are there, and patience will be key as Manchester United aim to rebuild.
