Todd Boehly Reveals Chelsea Owners Likely to Split Over Major Disagreement

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has admitted that the club’s stadium redevelopment plans could determine whether he continues his partnership with Clearlake Capital, the majority shareholder.

Boehly and Clearlake have had a strained relationship, with both sides previously exploring the possibility of buying each other out. While tensions have eased in recent months, disagreements over the club’s future direction still remain.

One of the biggest issues is whether Chelsea should expand Stamford Bridge—which currently holds around 40,000 fans—or build a brand-new stadium elsewhere. Earl’s Court has been mentioned as a possible location, but no final decision has been made.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Boehly made it clear that this decision could shape the future of Chelsea’s ownership.

“We have to think long-term about what we’re trying to accomplish,” he said. “We have a big stadium development opportunity that we have to figure out. That’s going to be where we’re either aligned or ultimately decide to go different ways.”

Despite the uncertainty at the ownership level, Chelsea’s performances on the pitch have improved. The team currently sits in fourth place in the Premier League, putting them in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League—a competition they haven’t played in since Boehly and Clearlake took over in 2022.

Boehly has previously explored securing full control of Chelsea, but he also suggested that the current ownership structure could remain the same.

“The status quo is fine,” Boehly said. “We’ve learned from each other and we’re going to be able to work it out any which way.”

He also pointed out that, despite their differences, he and Clearlake have been working towards the same goal of building a young, competitive squad with long-term contracts.

“If you look at the evolution of the team, we’ve been aligned on what we’re trying to do and build,” Boehly explained. “In order to do all these things, we had to be aligned.”

While Chelsea’s on-field progress is promising, the off-field uncertainty regarding stadium plans and ownership remains a key issue. Boehly’s latest comments suggest that the club’s next major decision—whether to stay at Stamford Bridge or move to a new location—could shape the future of Chelsea’s ownership structure.
