"It's So Important" – Phil Foden Reveals Man City's Plan to Rescue Their Season

Manchester City star Phil Foden has made it clear that the club must finish in the Premier League’s top four and win the FA Cup to salvage what has been a disappointing season.

Unlike previous years, Manchester City has struggled in the 2024/25 campaign. After dominating the league for four straight seasons, Pep Guardiola’s team is now sitting in fifth place, with only nine games left. They are out of the title race and are now fighting just to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Foden, who was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year last season after scoring 27 goals and providing 13 assists, has also had a tough season. The 24-year-old has been inconsistent and hasn’t been able to hit the same level of performance as before.

Despite their struggles, City still have a chance to win a trophy, as they are in the FA Cup quarter-finals. However, Foden believes that winning the cup alone won’t be enough—it’s also important to secure a top-four finish in the league.

Speaking to the PA news agency, Foden admitted that City’s current situation isn’t what they had planned at the start of the season. However, he still believes they can finish strong.

“Qualifying for the Champions League is so important,” Foden said. “If we win the FA Cup and finish in the top four, it will save what has been a poor season in my eyes.”

He emphasized how vital it is for the team to step up in the final weeks of the season:

“It’s one of our main targets now to make sure that we are playing Champions League football next season. It’s in our hands—we have to believe in ourselves and win our games.”

Foden also admitted that City’s struggles this season have been a wake-up call. He admitted that their past dominance wasn’t something that could last forever.

“What we were doing in the past wasn’t normal. The level of football we set was so high, and it’s difficult to keep it up every season. This year has been tough, but we can still finish strong.”

Even though this season hasn’t gone as planned, Foden is staying positive about the future. He believes that this challenging period will only make City stronger in the long run.

“People have seasons like this—it’s part of football,” he said. “You can’t always be at the top, and there will be ups and downs. But it’s all about how you respond.”

Foden also promised that if City wins more trophies in the future, he will appreciate those moments even more.

“If I ever win anything again, I will make sure I enjoy it even more because this season has shown how quickly things can change.”

With nine Premier League games left and a crucial FA Cup tie against Bournemouth coming up, Manchester City still has time to make the most out of this season. The pressure is on, but if they can secure Champions League qualification and lift the FA Cup, it might just be enough to call this season a success.
