Dean Huijsen Reveals Why He Rejected Chelsea to Join Real Madrid

Dean Huijsen has revealed why he turned down big interest from Premier League clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal to join Real Madrid this summer, calling it a “dream come true” and saying he only ever wanted to wear the famous white shirt.

The 20-year-old defender had a fantastic debut season with Bournemouth, playing in 36 matches across all competitions and quickly becoming one of the most talked-about young centre-backs in Europe. His strong performances caught the attention of several top clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle.

But once Real Madrid entered the race, there was only one club Huijsen had in mind.

“Ever since Real Madrid called, I didn’t have eyes for any other teams,” Huijsen said during his official presentation at the Bernabéu. “I wanted to be here from day one. Madrid is the club of my life, and I hope to be here for many years to come.”

Madrid triggered Huijsen’s £50 million release clause at Bournemouth and agreed personal terms with the Spain international, who has now signed a five-year contract with the Spanish giants. He will wear the No. 24 shirt, most recently used by Arda Güler.

The former Juventus defender was joined by his proud parents at the ceremony, where he thanked his family for supporting him and helping him reach the highest level.

“I’m joining the best club in the world and I’m here to give it my all,” he said. “I’ll work hard, stay humble, and hopefully win many trophies with this amazing team.”

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez also praised Huijsen’s loyalty and his desire to join Madrid despite having plenty of other options.

“You had many offers, but you made it clear from the start that your dream was to play for Real Madrid,” Pérez said. “At just 20 years old, you’re already one of the best young defenders in the world.”

Huijsen also spoke about his conversations with new Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso and how their discussion helped him feel even more confident about his decision.

“I spoke with Xabi Alonso, and he told me what he expects from me,” Huijsen said. “I believe I fit very well in his system, and I think we’re going to have some beautiful years ahead.”
